How to Prepare Your Home for a Private Event Photographer

Hosting an event in your own home—whether it’s a 50th birthday, an engagement, or an intimate dinner—adds a level of warmth and personality that a hotel ballroom just can’t match.
However, residential spaces present unique challenges for photography. To ensure you get those bright, airy, and "discreet" shots EDT Studio is known for, here are a few simple ways to prepare your space before the first guest arrives.
1. Let the Natural Light In
Light is the most important guest at your party. Before your photographer arrives, open all the curtains and blinds—even in rooms you don’t think will be used. Natural light creates a "soft" look on skin tones that artificial lights can’t replicate.
Pro Tip: If you have sheer curtains, keep them closed; they act as a giant light diffuser, making everyone look amazing.
2. The "De-Clutter" Walkthrough
You’d be surprised what the camera picks up. Do a quick sweep for things like TV remotes, tissue boxes, or stacks of mail on the kitchen island. By clearing these small distractions, the focus remains entirely on your guests and your beautiful decor.
3. Ambience Over Overhead Lights
Standard overhead "downlights" can often be harsh and create unflattering shadows under the eyes. I always recommend dimming your main lights and relying on lamps, candles, or fairy lights.
The Benefit: It creates a "glow" in the background of your photos (we call it bokeh) that makes the images feel high-end and cinematic.
4. Create a "Safe Zone" for Gear
Private events are busy! It helps immensely if there is a small, out-of-the-way corner (like a study or a hallway nook) where I can discreetly swap batteries or lenses without being in the flow of traffic. This allows me to remain "invisible" throughout the night.
5. Fresh Greenery and Florals
If you’re looking for that "editorial" look, flowers are your best friend. Even a simple arrangement on a coffee table provides a beautiful foreground element that adds depth and color to your gallery.
Your Home, Captured Beautifully
My approach to home events is always "discreet and respectful." I’m there to capture the laughter and the atmosphere of your hospitality, ensuring you have a professional gallery that feels as personal as the event itself.
