From NZ to AU: Bringing a New Perspective to Melbourne Events

Moving a creative business across the Tasman is no small feat. A few months ago, I packed up EDT Studio in New Zealand and officially called Melbourne home.
People often ask me, "Why Melbourne?" The answer is simple: the energy. This city has a rhythm and an appreciation for the arts that is infectious. But as I’ve settled into the local event scene, I’ve realized that being the "new guy" in town is actually my greatest strength as a photographer.
Here is what I’ve learned about Melbourne’s creative energy so far.
1. A City of Hidden Details
In New Zealand, I was used to the grand, sweeping landscapes. Melbourne is different—it’s a city of textures. From the bluestone laneways to the Victorian-era ceilings in Carlton, I’ve found myself looking closer at the details. My photography has become even more focused on those small, "blink-and-you-miss-it" moments that make a Melbourne event feel so unique.
2. The Sophistication of the "Private" Event
Whether it’s a milestone birthday in Toorak or a corporate launch in the CBD, there is a level of sophistication here that I love. Melbourne hosts know how to throw a party, but they also value their privacy. This has allowed me to lean even further into my "discreet" style—capturing the high-end glamour without ever being in the way.
3. A Fresh Eye on Iconic Landmarks
When you see the Royal Exhibition Building or the National Trust gardens every day, you might stop noticing how incredible they are. Coming from NZ, I still have that "newcomer’s awe." Every time I shoot at an iconic Melbourne venue, I’m looking for a fresh angle that locals might have overlooked.
4. The Warmth of the Creative Community
The welcome I’ve received from local event planners, venue managers, and fellow creatives has been incredible. Melbourne isn't just a place to work; it’s a place to collaborate. I’m excited to continue building these relationships and contributing to the city’s vibrant event culture.
Let’s Create Something Beautiful
I might be a new face in the Melbourne photography scene, but I bring years of experience and a deep passion for storytelling with me. I’m currently booking for the upcoming season and would love to bring my "discreet" lens to your next celebration.
