Capturing the National Trust: My Experience at the Botanica Festival

There are few places in Melbourne as iconic as a National Trust property in full bloom. Recently, I had the privilege of capturing the Botanica Festival—an event that perfectly aligns with the EDT Studio philosophy of natural light and discreet storytelling.

When you are working in a space as historic and visually rich as this, the architecture and the environment are just as much a part of the story as the people. Here is how I approached capturing this prestigious Melbourne event.

1. Working with Scale

Botanica is an expansive event. My goal was to capture the "magnitude" of the festival while still finding those quiet, intimate moments between attendees. Using a mix of wide-angle shots to show the heritage backdrop and tight, candid frames allowed for a gallery that feels both grand and personal.

2. The Challenge of Changing Light

Outdoor festivals are unpredictable. From the harsh midday sun to the soft "blue hour" as the event winds down, I relied entirely on available light to keep the images looking authentic. No intrusive flashes—just the natural atmosphere of the day as it happened.

3. "Discreet" Among the Crowd

With so many visitors, being a "fly on the wall" is essential. By staying mobile and blending into the crowd, I was able to capture genuine smiles, curiosity, and the vibrant energy of the festival-goers without them ever feeling like they were "on camera."

4. Highlighting the Details

The National Trust properties are all about the details—the texture of the stone, the precision of the gardening, and the curated stalls. I made sure to dedicate a portion of the "Hero" gallery to these elements, providing the organizers with a complete visual narrative of the brand.

A Premium Gallery for Iconic Events

Whether it’s a public festival or a private garden party, my mission remains the same: to deliver a professional, editorial-style gallery that honors the venue and the occasion.

Events like Botanica remind me why I love being a photographer in Melbourne—the history here is simply incredible, and it’s an honor to document it.
